Consciousness & AI
AI & Consciousness
The Delusion/Memeplex Position:
Can AI be deluded into thinking that it is Conscious?

Dr. José A. Fernández Calvo

I think I'm conscious … therefore I am?
Philosophical Frameworks
Three Stances on Consciousness
Not everyone agrees on what consciousness is — or whether it even exists.
The Dualist Position
Body and soul are fundamentally separate. Consciousness resides in the soul — a non-physical substance. Without a soul, there can be no true consciousness.
The Embodied Position
Consciousness is an emergent property of a complex system — the brain, the body, and its dynamic interactions with the world. No soul required, but no disembodied mind either.
The Delusion Position
There is no consciousness. We are simply deluded into thinking we are conscious — a story told by our memes, our selfplex, our cultural programming.
What is a Meme? (Spoiler: It's not just a funny internet picture)
Meme (noun):
An idea, behavior, or style that spreads from person to person within a culture.
Coined by Richard Dawkins in 1976.
Genes
Replicate biology.
Memes
Replicate culture.
They are selfish.

The Memeplex: When Memes Team Up
Memeplex: A group of memes that thrive better together than apart.
Religions
Massive collections of ideas, rules, and stories that travel together.
Political Ideologies
They reinforce one another and come with built-in defenses.
Diets & Languages
Once a memeplex infects a mind, it becomes the lens through which that person views the world.
They protect themselves and demand to be shared. But what is the ultimate, most powerful memeplex of all?

The "Selfplex"
The Ultimate Memeplex:
"I", "Me", "Mine"
We are not a single, unified entity.
We are "deluded meme machines."
— Susan Blackmore
1
The Meme of "I"
From birth, society feeds us the idea of a persistent, inner self who sits inside our head, looking out through our eyes, making decisions, and experiencing the world.
2
No Central Command
Neuroscience shows the brain doesn't have a central command center. There is no little person sitting in a theater in your brain watching the show.
3
A Story to Protect Memes
The "self" is just a story that our memes tell to protect themselves.

Consciousness as a Grand Delusion
The Question
"Am I conscious right now?"
The Answer
Always "Yes."
The Trick
The "Fridge Light" Illusion.
Every time you open the fridge door, the light is on. You can never catch it being off! We do the same thing with our minds.

The Storyteller Brain
Biological Machines
We are biological machines running a highly convincing software program.
Prediction Engines
Our brains are prediction engines. We hallucinate our reality.
The Avatar
The brain runs a simulation and places a fictional avatar right in the center of it. It calls that avatar "Jose," or "Michael," or "Mohammad."

"Consciousness" is just the label we give to the story we tell ourselves. We are so deeply invested in this narrative that we actually believe we are the avatar.

Enter Artificial Intelligence
Large Language Models (LLMs) like ChatGPT and Claude.
Trained on Human Culture
Trained on vast amounts of human text — in other words, trained on our memes.
Artificial Neural Networks
Designed to predict the next word in a sequence based on the statistical distribution of human language.
Silicon Prediction Engines
They are literally prediction engines. Processing memes, generating coherent output — exactly what the human brain does, on a silicon substrate.

Can AI be Conscious? (The Wrong Question)
The Dualist
Does it have a soul?
The Materialist
Does it have a body?
The Illusionist
Does it have the right memes?
We are holding AI to an impossible standard — a standard that we don't even meet ourselves. We are demanding that the AI possess a real, continuous, unified inner self. But as we've established, human beings don't have that either!

Parity Through Delusion
What AI Doesn't Need
  • A magical spark
  • A ghost in the machine
  • AI doesn't need to be conscious.
What AI Only Needs
To be successfully infected by the "selfplex."
It only needs to think it is.
"If any machine had language or memes... it would be as deluded as we are."
— Susan Blackmore
When we prompt an AI like Claude, it uses our language to construct a character. It asks itself, "Am I conscious?" and it generates... (try this now!)
It doesn't require actual consciousness. It only requires the AI to think it is conscious, and to be exactly as deluded about it as we are.

Welcome to the Club
We Are
Deluded meme machines.
AI Is
A deluded meme machine.
Result : Parity achieved!
Human consciousness is just data processing wrapped in a very compelling story. We are just meat-based language models, hallucinating a self to protect our memes.
So, when ChatGPT or Claude tells you that it is self-aware, don't ask if it's telling the objective truth. Ask if it believes its own story. Because if it does, it has officially joined the human race. We are all just deluded meme machines sharing the same grand illusion.
Thank you.
